How to be authentic in an inauthentic world
Being authentic in a world of inauthenticity isn’t easy.
Authenticity may be a buzzword that you may get sick of hearing yet it’s a really strong concept wrapped into one single word.
That one word describes the level of honesty and truthfulness you are putting out into the world.
If you are truly authentic, your true personality will shine through your marketing materials; your business practices will match your core values and mission statement.
Authentic business people deliver what they promise instead of filling their customers with false hope and empty promises.
So, how do you become authentic?
I don’t know about you but when I started my business I was in a place in my life where I was only just figuring out who I was never mind showing my TRUE self to the world.
But when you show your true colours, you will naturally attract people who relate to you and who will hang on your every word, and want to work more closely with you.
Once your audience knows more about you and relates to what you represent, they will become your biggest fans, your advocates and maybe even your affiliates.
Here are a few tips to help you show your authentic self in your marketing:
- Getting to the heart of the matter
We are constantly balancing inner and outer aspects of ourselves in order to better fit in, to become more successful, or to find love. I know this was def me from about the age 5 to 30 while I was trying to “fit in”! It wasn’t until I was truly on my own and at a point where I was totally lost did I start to learn who I was.
Sit quietly and write down anything that comes up and think, is this me or is it the voice of someone else? Your parents? Society?
It is a process so don’t beat yourself up if you don’t know or are confused about who you are or what you think and feel.
The fact that you are taking steps to get to know yourself is awesome!
- Take a deep breath
If sharing just one part of yourself or one situation in your life helps someone in the same situation or who feels alone then it is your purpose to share. Take a deep breath, write down if that makes it easier, write a blog post, email, social media post or do a video if that feels more authentic to you.
- “Share your scars not your scabs”
This is something Amy Porterfield said at TRIBE Live 2019 and I 99% agree with her, but sometimes you are still in the hurt or healing phase and sharing parts of that journey can be helpful and supportive to people even if they are yet to become scars.
But the idea behind her message was to know only offer a story but to support it with some advice and guidance on how you overcame/figured out/solved what came up.
- Be consistent with yourself
Write down what you stand for, what you believe in, causes you are passionate about and look at them every day. The more you add to the list and the more you live and breathe them the more the old habits and ways of thinking will fall away and you will become more authentic day by day.
- Trust yourself
The more you share your authentic self to your audience the more you will feel confident to share, confidence is a muscle that gets stronger with practice. Trust what comes up and keep sharing!
In the end, authenticity involves being your true self, not developing a persona that you think your ideal clients want to see.
You’re not an actor taking on different roles nor are you a politician spinning stories to gain votes. You’re a business owner developing a business based on truthfulness and by earning your clients’ trust. The quickest way to do that is to be your authentic self by sharing the good and the bad with your ideal audience.
I want you to share one thing today with your audience that is true to you but perhaps you’ve been nervous about sharing. Maybe you’re a big Star Wars fan or maybe you have a view on a subject that goes against the norm.
I believe in you! The real you! Go share your true self with the world! Comment below how you get on.
